Internet opens up a new niche markets all around globe by connecting people with similar ideas and tastes.
Niche marketing is the process of finding small but potentially profitable market segments and designing custom-made products for them. Niche marketers are often reliant on the loyalty business model to maintain a profitable volume of sales. |
Of course we are not going to talk about knitting sweaters for penguins, but about making movies. Well, rather about selling movies.
While it is true that whatever you do someone other may find appealing there are particular groups of people or niche markets that turns out to be more profitable than others.
Two of such potentially large markets are horror and sci-fi films. If you are looking for an entry to the world of movie making these two genres (or some smart combination of them) are the best bet for a starting movie maker. There are simply people who feel obliged to watch any horror or sci-fi movie just because it has been made. I had seen quite a few pretty bad amateur horror movies that actually sell relatively fine in these niche markets. (This is not to encourage you make a bad movies!)
Also there seems to be always a sci-fi and/or horror convention held somewhere every week. And these two genres conveniently overlap. You won't get chased out of sci-fi convention because you are trying to sell a horror movie there. You also see a lot of film makers recently combine both of the genres into a sci-fi horror just to be sure.
Many amateur movies seems to become often horrors even without trying. While there may be no zombie robot vampires, you still want to cover your eyes when you are watching it. It happened to me few times.
Now, if you for example decide to make a serious drama movie and you actually succeed (making it serious drama), you will have almost no place to show it or sell it. Strange and sad.
A good starting point to sell your amateur horror flick is for example the colorful Splatter Rampage. Just be warned, the quality of flicks offered there does really vary. And I mean really.
There are other independent movie retailers for example Rhino.
Of course the niche market is popular not because it sells endless copycats (that's the Hollywood job), but because small film-makers are not afraid to try new ideas and experiment. That is the way it should be. If you are honest and original, that's the best way to success.
We have also some ideas for future production, in fact one is already in making. Since we like the challenge, we would like to explore the more advanced aspect of DVD by making a fully interactive story - something that is not on the main menu of other studios. (No zombies)
