Real life low-budget DVD production scenario from the first shot to the finished product.
With all the cool technology around us today, producing movies from scratch is supposed to be a very simple task. All the hardware stuff one can't even pronounce can be easily obtained, ebayed, Xmased or borrowed. We can now edit video and author DVD even on a laptop and with the world-wide reaching arm and never sleeping eyes of the internet, selling should be just a matter of a spam. Unfortunately once we really start, things are not so simple.
Starting producer has a hard time to find a complete info about producing his/hers/its (just to be safe here) own TV or DVD feature from start to finish. Most of the information is often regarded as a "trade secret" for which some of the companies are not shy to charge thousands of your dollars. The truth is simple, things ARE easy if you know how to do it. And once you've successfully done it just once, next time it is a walk in the park. Because of this, production and authoring companies put a heavy smoke screen around them to discourage anybody from trying to make these first steps. There is probably nothing wrong with that, they want to feed their kids as much as we do. We honor all the hard earned knowledge and experience but we would like to also have fun by ourselves and give a jump-start to new producers.
The purpose o this guide or e-book is to describe a real-life project we had done by ourselves over many years, from the very first idea to the "lot's of money and fame" we will never have at the end.
No project is big enough for a low-budget TV producer.
We didn't just make some shaky documentary about our pet rabbit, burn few DVD's, send them to our grandma and call it the day. There are tons of useful guides like this all over the net and all waiting for the next Spielberg.
Cowboy Who?
"Cowboy Who? is a perfect parody of low-budget children's television largely because it is a low-budget children's television show itself." |
Our project described here is an ultra-low-budget kids TV show (12 episodes per season), that took a lot of hard work to make. If you are worried about the kids part, then we are ourselves still a big kids so it is probably ok. The show would be actually better described as a "kids show made by adults who would really rather be doing an adult show".
The general idea was to create a low-budget show that can be used by a local TV station as a harmless kids show (to interrupt for once a while the endless flow of their commercials), yet it should keep adults at least partially awake.
Show Regulars
Every successful show in history not only needs a bunch of likable and contradictory characters, but also regular features and as we learned by watching TV also a plenty of commercials. So we put to our little kids show all of these and a lot more!
As it turned out, the show become far different than the TV managers intended with a mixture of bizarre puppets, off-the-wall characters, silly sci-fi plots and goofy mockup advertisements. Actually it has almost everything, even a character with a phony accent. Everything we always wanted! And yes, it aired for three+ years!
What's more, we also proclaimed it being a real Cult Classic and that means a special treat for everybody loving cult classics.
The DVD described on following pages, is already available for sale. And as you will learn later, in an ultra low supply so hurry up!
